Cookie Policy

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website, so the site can recognize your browser on later visits. We also use a few similar technologies that work alongside cookies:

• Local storage.Data saved in your browser that isn't automatically sent with every request, used for things like remembering your cookie choices or a draft you're partway through.
• Session storage. Similar to local storage, but cleared automatically when you close the browser tab.
• Pixels and similar tags. Small pieces of code, sometimes used by third-party analytics or advertising providers, that can register when a page has loaded.

For simplicity, we refer to all of these together as “cookies” in this policy.

We use cookies to:

• Keep you signed in between visits, and protect your account.
• Remember choices you've made, like a saved location, search filters, or your cookie preferences.
• Understand, in aggregate, how the directory is used so we can fix problems and improve it.
• Prevent abuse, such as letting an anonymous visitor vote once on whether they'd recommend a business.
• Measure and, where you've allowed it, personalize advertising.

For non-essential cookies, we ask for your permission the first time you visit, and you're free to accept or decline each category individually — see Types of Cookies We Use below.

Where consent is the basis for a cookie category — Preferences, Statistics, and Marketing — we ask for it clearly, before those cookies are set, through the banner shown on your first visit. We tell you what each category is for, and you choose which ones to allow; Necessary cookies are the only exception, since the Service can't function without them.

You can withdraw or change your consent at any time — see How to Control Cookies below. Withdrawing consent doesn't affect the lawfulness of any use of cookies before you withdrew it.

Our cookie banner groups cookies into four categories. By default, Necessary, Preferences, and Statistics cookies are enabled and Marketing cookies are off, until you make your own choice.

• Session cookies. Temporary — deleted automatically when you close your browser. We use these to keep pages working correctly during a single visit.
• Persistent cookies. Remain on your device until they expire or you delete them, so we can recognize you on a later visit — for example, to keep you signed in or remember your cookie preferences.

We keep cookie data only as long as it's useful for the purpose it was set for, and no longer than necessary:

• Necessary cookies(like staying signed in, or remembering your cookie choice) persist until you sign out, decline them, or clear your browser data — we don't set a separate expiration on top of that.
• Preferences cookies persist for as long as the underlying feature needs them — for example, a pending photo upload is cleared automatically once you finish or abandon it.
• Statistics and Marketing cookiesfollow the retention period set by the third-party provider that issues them (typically ranging from 30 days to about 2 years), described in that provider's own policy.

Below are the specific items we set directly (not counting third-party cookies, described next).

Some cookies are set by third parties whose services are embedded in the Service. We don't control these third parties' cookies, and their use of them is governed by their own privacy policies, not this one.

• Analytics. Helps us understand aggregate usage patterns (Statistics cookies above).
• Maps. Loading a map on a listing or search page may set cookies from our mapping provider.
• Payments. If a business subscribes to a paid plan, our payment processor, Stripe, may set cookies during checkout for fraud prevention.
• Advertising.If you've allowed Marketing cookies, ad partners may use them to show more relevant ads and measure their performance.

If you allow Marketing cookies, we and our advertising partners may use them to show ads that are more relevant to you, both on and off the Service, and to measure how well those ads perform. This is sometimes called interest-based or behavioral advertising. Declining Marketing cookies means you'll still see ads on the Service — they just won't be tailored to your activity.

Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal. There's no common industry standard for how sites should respond to DNT, so we currently don't change our behavior based on it. Instead, we honor the choices you make directly through our cookie banner and preference panel, which give you more granular control than a single browser signal.

You're free to decline any non-essential cookie category. Here's what to expect if you do:

• Necessary cookiescan't be disabled — blocking them through your browser will likely break core features like signing in.
• Preferences cookies off:we won't remember things like a saved location between visits.
• Statistics cookies off:your visits won't contribute to the usage data we use to improve the Service — everything else works the same.
• Marketing cookies off:you'll see the same amount of advertising, just less tailored to you.

You can change your cookie choices at any time by clicking Manage Cookie Preferences above, which reopens the same preference panel shown on your first visit.

Through your browser

Most browsers let you view, delete, and block cookies through their settings, usually under “Privacy” or “Site settings.” Because this is controlled separately per browser and device, you may need to repeat this on each one you use. Blocking necessary cookies may prevent parts of the Service — like staying signed in — from working correctly.

The Service may link to, or embed content from, third-party websites — such as a business's own website, or a mapping provider. Those sites may set their own cookies according to their own policies, which we don't control and aren't responsible for. We encourage you to review the cookie or privacy policy of any third-party site before providing information to it.

The Service is not directed to children, and we don't knowingly use cookies to collect information from children under 13. See our Privacy Policy for more on how we handle children's information generally.

We may update this Cookie Policy as the cookies and technologies we use change. We'll update the “Last updated” date above when we do. See also our Privacy Policy for how we handle personal information more broadly.
